Highway and drainage engineering
We design highways and their drainage, and we advise on and check designs prepared by others. Every scheme is led by one of our directors, each with over 15 years' experience in highway and drainage design.
Design
We design the highway and its drainage together, or either one on its own, depending on what the scheme needs. Each discipline's Civil 3D model is combined into a federated model and checked before issue.
-
Junctions. Site accesses, priority junctions, roundabouts, the civils for signal-controlled junctions, and junction improvements.
-
Roads and streets. Development internal roads, urban and rural link roads, road improvement schemes, and cycle and pedestrian schemes.
-
Site infrastructure. Data centre sites, EV charging hubs, car parks, service yards and loading areas, earthworks and levels, and utility and ducting coordination.
-
Data centres. Access for operation and maintenance, internal roads and parking, drainage and SuDS, platforms and utility coordination.
-
Drainage design and SuDS. Drainage strategies, flood risk assessments, site-wide drainage and SuDS, adoptable sewers under Section 104, and highway drainage.
-
3D civil modelling. Civil 3D models from which formation design and levels are output for site, and models on their own for contractors and consultancies.
Advisory and review
For when you need an answer before you commit, a second look at someone else's design, or an independent check before submission.
-
Scheme advice. Early-stage advice and access appraisals, second opinions, and departures strategy.
-
Design reviews. Client-side review of designs prepared by others, and due diligence before you buy or invest.
-
Independent checking. Independent design checks, pre-submission checks of Section 278, Section 38 and Section 104 packages, and checks for highway authorities.
At any stage, under any agreement
We can join a scheme at planning and feasibility, preliminary design, detailed design, technical approval or construction, and stay with it to the end. Schemes are designed for adoption under Section 278, Section 38 or Section 184, with sewers under Section 104, or as private roads.
Sectors
We design for residential developments, commercial and leisure sites, EV charging hubs, industrial sites and data centres, education sites, and highway schemes for highway authorities.
Who we work with
Developers, planning consultants, architects, engineering consultancies, contractors and highway authorities. We also have experience working with other consultancies, in joint venture or as a sub-consultant, where our services and skills complement theirs.
Where we work
We're based in Telford and work across Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Powys and Wrexham. We're also happy to take on schemes further afield.
Common questions
Do I need a highway engineer for a planning application?
Usually, if the scheme creates or changes an access onto a public road. The highway authority will normally want a drawing showing the access, visibility splays and vehicle turning, and sometimes an access appraisal. We prepare these to the authority's own standards, so they can be assessed without delay.
What is a Section 278 agreement?
It's an agreement with the highway authority that lets a developer carry out works on the existing public road, such as a new junction or road widening. The works must be designed to the authority's standards and pass its technical approval. We prepare the design and supporting information for that approval.
What is a Section 38 agreement?
It's how a new road built by a developer is adopted by the highway authority and then maintained at public expense. The road must meet the authority's adoption standards. We design new estate roads and their drainage with adoption in mind from the start.
Do I need a drainage strategy?
Most planning applications for new buildings or hard surfacing need one. Where the site is in a flood zone, or larger than one hectare, a flood risk assessment is usually needed too. The council will want to see how surface water is managed, normally with SuDS. We prepare both alongside the site layout.
Can you check a design prepared by someone else?
Yes. We carry out independent checks and design reviews of highway and drainage designs, for developers and for other consultancies. Findings come back ranked by risk, so you know what needs fixing first.
Which areas do you cover?
Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Powys and Wrexham, and further afield. We design to each highway authority's own guide.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The site location, what you need (even if it's just a question), any layout, drawings or survey you already have, and the stage you're at. You'll hear back within one working day.
