Junction design
We design junctions from a single private access up to major roundabouts with dual carriageway connectivity. We can design the highway drainage with the junction, or the junction on its own. We design for sites across Telford and Wrekin, Shropshire, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Powys and Wrexham, to each highway authority's own guide.
Accesses
Accesses to single dwelling or fields to development sites, from a dropped kerb to a bellmouth, with visibility splays and swept paths for the vehicles that will use them. Visibility is set to Manual for Streets or DMRB CD 123, depending on the road's speed and class. We prepare the drawings for Section 184 approval.
Priority junctions
T-junctions and crossroads designed to DMRB CD 123 or the local highway authority's design guide, including ghost islands and right-turn lanes.
Roundabouts
Mini, compact and normal roundabouts to DMRB CD 116, including large roundabouts with dual carriageway arms. Entry deflection, visibility and approach geometry are checked against the standard, and any departure is agreed before detailed design.
Signal-controlled junctions (civils)
We design the civils: geometry, kerbs, surfacing, road markings, pedestrian crossings, and coordinate ducts and chambers for the signal equipment. The signal design itself, including staging and equipment, is by a signals specialist, and we coordinate with them.
Junction improvements
Improving existing junctions for new development, usually delivered under a Section 278 agreement. We work from the topographic survey and the existing highway boundary, so the design fits what's on the ground.
Drainage
We can design the junction's highway drainage too, including gullies and kerb drainage, carrier drains, and the connection to an existing network or to SuDS. See Drainage design and SuDS.
What others provide
Junction capacity modelling is carried out by the transport consultant, and we design to the layout it supports. Signal design is by a specialist.
