Where we work
We're based in Telford, and most of our work is within a couple of hours of it. Each highway authority has its own design guide, adoption process and drainage requirements, and we design to them from the start, so the scheme doesn't have to be reworked at technical approval.
Telford and Wrekin
Our home area. Telford & Wrekin Council publishes its own highways design guide for new development, alongside Manual for Streets and DMRB. We design site accesses, estate roads and Section 278 works to it, and prepare Section 38 and Section 184 submissions. Sewers for adoption go to Severn Trent under Section 104.
Shropshire
Shropshire Council's design standard for new roads is SMART, the Shropshire Manual for Adoptable Roads and Transport (2021), with its own standard details. SMART covers the full range of roads a development may need, and we design to it from the first layout.
West Midlands
The metropolitan boroughs (Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Coventry) each set their own design and adoption requirements. We design to the relevant authority's guidance, and to LTN 1/20 for cycle and pedestrian schemes, which urban authorities increasingly expect on new development.
Staffordshire
Staffordshire County Council's Residential Design Guide and its Highways Base Specification set the standard for adoptable roads, with Section 38 and Section 278 agreements managed through the county's highway agreements process.
Cheshire
Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester are separate highway authorities, each with its own adoption requirements. We design to the relevant council's standards, with sewers for adoption by the local water company, which for most of Cheshire is United Utilities.
Powys and Wrexham
In Wales, the Highways Act agreements (Section 38, Section 278 and Section 184) work the same way, but drainage is different. Since January 2019, most new developments need approval from the council's SuDS Approval Body (SAB) before construction, and the drainage must meet the Welsh Government's statutory SuDS standards. We design the drainage to those standards, ready for the SAB application, alongside the highway design, with sewers for adoption by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water or Hafren Dyfrdwy.
Further afield
We're happy to take on schemes further afield. We work to the local highway authority's design guide wherever the scheme is.
